New Base: Hearth Sock

Hearth Sock

I am so excited to finally launch my new sock yarn, Hearth Sock. This one has been in the works for about a year now, and in that time it has been tested by myself as well as a group of lovely testers. for wear and durability.

I’ve been wanting to create a slightly thicker sock yarn than my Natural Sock, because as a loose knitter I was having to knit on 1.75mm needles to achieve the required gauge to have 35sts per 10cm for good wear.

So I created Hearth Sock to come in at 330m per 100g, and on 2mm needles I achieve a gauge of approximately 31sts per 10cm, which is much more comfortable to knit, and an acceptable tightness for durability. I also designed it as a 3-ply yarn (3 strands make up the thread), to add a little more roundness to the yarn (making for good stitch definition) with a high twist for durability. It is also non-superwash and nylon as are all my yarns. I would really recommend sticking to this gauge (or tighter) when knitting no nylon socks, which may mean you need to cast on more stitches than usual. You can read my post here for my experiments on this.

As well as being thicker, I also wanted it to be a bit more sheepy and I wanted it to be a grey base. This would allow me to create deeper, more heathered colours. So after a few fibre pulls, I decided on 50% Jacobs, 50% BFL.

A little note aside from this shop launch, I will be taking a break from shop updates until at least February after this one as I have welcomed a little bambino into my life!
