New Base: BFL Mule + Masham Lambswool 4ply Limited Edition | Sourced in Northern Ireland

It is my pleasure to introduce one of my new limited edition bases to you that will be in the next shop update on 29th September, 8:00pm GMT+1.

It hales from Ballycastle, a small seaside town perched right on the north coast of Northern Ireland. It’s known for its fish and chips, the Lamma’s Fair and its views to Scotland. The label, designed by my friend Anna Hussey, depicts Fairhead, a really iconic feature of the Ballycastle landscape, and a beautiful place to walk.

The yarn comes from a single flock of BFL Mule and Masham Lambswool. Sometimes people ask or get confused about what BFL Mule actually is- it’s when a Scottish Blackface sheep has been crossed with a BlueFaced Leicester. I promise it’s not a donkey crossed with a horse!

The addition of the Masham Lambswool adds in a little bit of squish and balances out the coarser, sheepier Blackface. The yarn itself hasn’t much in the way of elasticity, but it does have a beautiful drape, courtesy of the longwools in there.

The yarn is a fairly white base colour, and makes for a nice base for dyeing on. It would be perfect for shawls and garments (sweaters and cardigans).
